Yunquera
She spent twenty years imagining these white walls from a cold Odesa hallway. In Yunquera, she finally stood inside the painting. This is what that morning looked like.

About This Work
The view looks straight up a narrow street toward the church tower, white walls on both sides and deep morning shadows cutting across them. Maryna painted this on location in a single session. You can feel it in the washes, the way the light sits inside the paper rather than being painted on top of it.
There is a woman in red at the bottom of the street. She is small, almost a detail, but she is what keeps the painting from being purely architectural. Yunquera is a calm piece, but not a passive one. The whites have weight. The shadows have temperature. For a room that needs stillness with something alive in it, this is the right work.

Water, Light & the White of the Paper
The First Wash
I begin by stretching the paper and letting it breathe. That first layer of water is everything. It decides where the pigment will flow, where it will bloom, where it will surprise me.
Color Conversations
I mix my watercolors slowly, often returning to the same shade three or four times until it feels right. Nothing is forced. The paint knows when it's ready to meet the paper.
Chasing the Light
The final layers are the quietest. I work dry, small strokes, pulling shadows forward and letting the white of the paper do what no pigment ever could. Hold the light.

"Water does not lie. Whatever I am feeling that day ends up on the paper whether I planned it or not."
